“Blessed be the Lord, for he has wondrously shown his steadfast love to me”
I tend to be a “glass half empty” kind of person, I spend a lot of time and effort focused on what is wrong, or what is sad or hopeless. I suppose I can identify with Eeyore in the Winnie the Pooh stories, perpetually gloomy, sure that no one likes him, and all is wrong with the world around him. “End of the road... nothing to do... and no hope of things getting better”, says Eeyore. Lately I have been wallowing in that place of emptiness and sadness and I realize its time to change my view of the world and look at the “glass half full” side of life.
Watching the news the other night, A Mother was talking about her daughter who had contracted an aggressive cancer, she was hospitalized, the bills mounting up, and her daughter’s classmates have been raising money to help out. At first the Mom explained that she was angry at God… “Why did God do this to my daughter?” but than understood, that wasn’t God, God was in all of those in the community who came forward offering love and assistance.
Following the earthquake and tsunami in Japan, the Japanese official related how humbled he was by the money that was being sent to Japan to help in the face of this disaster. A few checks for 100 dollars or 500 dollars, but mostly, small amounts, 5 or 10 dollars, sent from people all over the world.
The compassion and assistance to the sick young girl and to the people of Japan was God in action, showing his “wondrously steadfast love” for us. During this Lenten season, I am going to try to “flip” my thinking to also look at the other side, what is positive and beautiful, hopeful and joyful. This Lent I will look to find those moments of Grace and truth and know that God is there.
