What to do with the "Things"

I watched a very silly romantic comedy with absolutely no redeeming social value... and really just flat out bad.   One question that was asked in the movie has stuck with me.  The question was "if your house was on fire, and you had 60 seconds, what would you take"?

Every day there is further evidence of the economic issues in this country.  Several friends who have lost their jobs, budget cuts that are hurting the most vulnerable in our midst.  The unemployment rate at 9.6% and thats just those who are still looking.... not those who have given up or taken low paying part time jobs to just make some money to support their families.  Its scary out there.

Than today in the news there is an article about food riots in Mozambique.  "A few pennies' increase in the price of a loaf of bread can mean the difference between getting by and going hungry'.  The economy is bad here in the US, in other parts of the world it's catastrophic.

It seems to me that at the end of day the "things" in my house are not going to provide safety or security in todays scary world. Those things can't fix  the economy, or comfort me when times are difficult.    And maybe it's enough right now to know that and not hang on to tight to all those "things" that I have always considered so important but to remember what is good and right.

I don't have the answers about the scary world, I probably don't even know the question... what I do know is that I recognize that I have been so blessed and am profoundly grateful for all those blessings.  And what would I take from my house if I had 60 seconds? Not a thing....
