The confirmation yays or nays for the first Latino woman for the United States Supreme Court are pending. It appears it will be a partisan vote. Republicans voting "no", and Democrats in the affirmative. The apparent objection to Sotomayer is that she will be a "judicial activist", that she will not be able to be impartial when faced with cases that are race or gender based. The Republicans seem to have selective amnesia regarding previous justices, including conservative Justice Clarence Thomas who has stated, that who he is, and where he came from does have an impact on him as a judge.

It seems to me that justice is supposed to be blind, not stupid, or naive. Of course a Latino woman will bring that life experience to the bench. Just as a white male raised in a life of majority priviledge, will bring that life experience to the bench. It is hoped that whoever is a judge would use the law to make decisions, decisions reached through deliberate study and thought, that includes compassion and empathy for those whose lives will be affected.

Could be the objections to Sotomayer may have more to do with who she is rather than her resume as judge. Just a thought.
